My attempt this year to try to track down the Northern Lights was only half hearted. Last year not so, having driven into the farmland above Alton, IL. As I was driving up 109, I could not see them at all until a colleague texted me and suggested that I use my cell phone camera as a sort of finding aid. Then finding an obliging bean field and a farmstead, I set up my tripod and took a series of long exposures; these new cameras can practically see in the dark. The really wide exposure is series of shots stitched together. And I believe that I fixed one glitch on the image, thus editing galaxies and galaxies of stars. So that particular shot is not a great star map 🙂
