Quite obviously, I like to take flower photographs, but, sadly, I am not much of a botanist and often do not know of what I have taken a picture. I thought that these flowers were common dogwoods when I took the picture today, but upon closer inspection realized that they did not have the rounded leaves dotted with red and the center is different.
Thankfully, being a librarian, I am pretty good at searching, and I like to try to challenge myself to see if I can come up with a search string to find what I am looking for. The search string that finally worked for this identification was in Google images with the string “looks like a dogwood” tree.” I had to read the comments on this blog entry till I finally found my answer. These are a Kousa Dogwood or Japanese Flowering Dogwood, related to the other.
