That looks like a husk to me. Actually, my parents have sold corn every August since I was a teenager. My high school math teacher yields such a large harvest that he needs help selling it, so my parents have done it for years. Really, Michigan is known for its corn and apples. Similar climate to Washington State-also known for its apples.
