Interesting article. I think what struck me most is that is that the effort is so focused on what they AREN’t going to do. No abortions, no pornography, no contraceptives, etc. I have nothing against people living the way they wish, but this approach seems selfish to me. Will they work to provide job skills training and employment opportunity for the parents of unplanned children? Will they provide safe havens and nurturing environments for children at risk? These things would impress me more.
Coincidentally, Liguori Publications (where I work) was intended to become a Catholic community where laity and religious would live communally and share a common charisim. Only one house for the planned community was ever built and the occupant recently went into a nursing home. The Redemptorists still have a reputation for working closely with lay people even if the Liguori zip code now only has religious residents.
Also coincidentally, we used a software company called Publisher’s Advantage for many years. It had strong financial ties to Monaghan. I’ve never met him, but I know a lot of people who have.
Let me wrap up by saying that I don’t mean to belittle his efforts, but I think this type of approach just treats symptoms.
Peace,
